Strange Bedfellows

Context:

Strange Bedfellows by Ina Park is a Flatiron Books nonfiction title about the science and history of STDs, but the tone of the prose is a bit less formal than you would expect. This, combined with the cover design, informed my choices for this title. I opted for a bright red case with classic black gloss foil to best tie in the package and highlight the type. The headband is a medical-vibed red and white, seen in the first image on this slideshow. This title came with charts from the author and several had to be finessed to become print ready. Hierarchically, each section has a combination of different subheads, so it important to communicate the correct order for readers through type choices. There is also an extensive notes section + an index, which require specific typographic skill to set up properly and correctly estimate how much space they’ll take up in the book.

Tasks:

Art direction, case color choices, typesetting entire book, and chart creation + prepress.

Skills used:

Art direction, creative project management, inDesign, print production, typography, and color theory.
